Rolf Jacob Sartorius was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was taken to Virginia for adoption when his parents fell ill and they were either unable or unwilling to care for him. The adoptive parents raised him in Reston, Virginia. He started performing in musicals around age 7. Vine, an American short-form online video host service, closed its doors in 2017. Sartorius posted lip-syncing videos on Vine with more than 8 million subscribers by August 2016. The social network he was a part of provided him with a way to escape being bullied because he was a victim. The way he used to describe it was that prior to Musical.ly, he wasn't very social. He believed that nobody was watching him, aside from the camera.
